Connecting the Marina Bay Sands and Casino with the Esplanade, just west of the Singapore Flyer, the Helix is a pedestrian only bridge of striking appearance and one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks. Built in 2010 and incorporating a curved, tubular mesh-design, the bridge’s look is meant to represent human DNA structure. Visually striking, the Helix is particularly stunning at night when it is lit by thousands of LED lights. Moreover, this is a stunning spot from which to enjoy panoramic views of the city’s skyline and you’ll find several viewing platforms built specifically for this purpose.

Interesting Facts and Figures

  • The Helix Bridge is only 919 feet long, yet if you were to stretch out the stainless steel tubes used in its construction, they’d reach almost three kilometers in length.
  • The double helix structure design is supposed to represent ‘rebirth and growth’ although a net-like design had always been envisaged, originally meant to represent Singapore’s fishing roots.
  • The lightweight, curved, double helix design is the first of its kind in the world.
  • The Helix was built using over 650 tonnes of stainless steel and 1,000 tonnes of carbon steel and constructed by the same local company which built the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum.
