Shangri-La Plaza, popularly called ‘Shang’, is one of the upscale malls located at the corner of Shaw Boulevard and EDSA, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong, Philippines. With a total leasable space of 175,000 square meters, the main floor has 7 levels and 1 basement level while the East Wing has 6 floors and 2 basement parking levels.

Owned by the Kuok Group of Companies of Shangrila-Hotels and Resorts, it was awarded 2013 Shopping Center of the Year. This mall is near other Shangri-La properties like St. Francis Shangri-La Place and EDSA Shangri-La Hotel as well as other malls like Starmall, EDSA Central; Robinson’s Galleria, SM Megamall; and The Podium.

History

Shangri-La Plaza started operations on November 21, 1991, with over 300 retail shops and dining establishments. In 2013, its newest expansion called the East Wing was opened with a façade of fritted glass and steel. Renovation in the main mall started in September 2013 which will give it a newer look and meld it seamlessly with the East Wing’s design.

Things to See and Do



Main Mall

The 7 levels of the main mall house retail shops, fast food chains, and restaurants. Crossings Department Store, Rustan’s Department Store, and Rustan’s Supermarket are three of the anchor stores located at the Main Mall together with US-based True Value hardware chain.

Bayo is a Filipino brand with classic but stylish and affordable ready-to-wear apparel and accessories for women. Peppermint is a shop that sells pre-teen and girl’s clothes that are 100% Philippine made using imported materials. Cole Haan, established in 1928, is a U.S. brand that sells quality shoes, handbags, accessories, and outerwear. The 100-year old German Mont Blanc brand has writing instruments, watches; perfume, jewelry; sunglasses, and leather goods. The Blue Kitchen is a local food shop known for selling choice artisanal food and regional specialties like spicy tuyo (dried fish), frozen preserved meat, and baked goods.

At the basement is the Garden Food Court with different local stalls serving a variety of dishes. The Ledge, at the sixth floor, has several local and international dining establishments as well. One popular restaurant at Shangri-La Plaza is PF Chang’s which has been serving Asian-inspired dishes for 20 years with specialties like Chang’s Spicy Chicken, Oolong Chilean Sea Bass, and Shaking Beef. Davao Tuna Grill is a Filipino seafood grill restaurant chain serving Davao City specialties like Grilled Tuna Belly, Grilled Tuna Panga (Jaw), and Chicken Inasal. Crustacia Thai Shrimp House serves authentic Thai cuisine like Singaporean Chili Crab, Crispy Baby Squid, and Chicken in Pandan Leaves.

East Wing

The East Wing is the retail podium of the 64-story residential development, One Shangri-La Place. Four of the six retail levels are connected by bridges to the Main Wing. Each level has its own theme zone just like the Main Wing. Its spacious interiors and plush ambiance house high-end shops and restaurants.

One of the impressive brands located in this wing is the French label, Yves Saint Laurent which has impressive collections for men and women including apparel, accessories; shoes, bags; perfumes, and make-up. Herve Leger is a French fashion house with an extensive display of gowns, dresses; shoes, and swimwear. Carven is a French designer brand for the modern woman featuring clothes, bags; accessories, and perfume without the couture price. Jewelmer is the shop to go for the best high quality, beautifully designed Palawan South Sea pearls and diamond jewelry. Regalong Pambahay offers wonderful things for the home including some items that would be great take-home souvenirs.

While there are a number of good restaurants in the main mall, the East Wing houses some interesting new restaurants including Wee Nam Kee. It is a Singapore restaurant chain that serves one of the best Hainanese Chicken in town. An international Japanese BBQ chain, Gyukaku lets you cook meat and vegetables at your table. Corazon Restaurant serves well-loved, classic Filipino-Hispanic dishes like Paella Valenciana, Blanca (Bacalao Vizcaina), and Gaudi (Chicken Galantine). Balboa is a fusion of Italian American cuisine like Buffalo Mozzarella, Bucatini Marinara and Prosciutto, Mushroom and Arugula Pizza. Zarzuela is a casual restaurant that specializes in Filipino cuisine like Crab & Shrimp Relleno, Spanish Style Bangus Belly Sardines, and Krispy Binagoongan (Pork with Fermented Shrimp).

Entertainment

Shangri-La Plaza has 5 state-of-the-art cinemas at Level 6 and 7 including the Premiere Theater which is a private 88-seater cinema with its own bar and lounge ideal for social and corporate events. There is a snack bar at the lobby and a reception area for private events.

Quantum Arcade at the Lower Ground Floor has arcade gaming machines, KTV room, Concierto stage, Nintendo, and Xbook gaming consoles, Kids Funland. The Q Arcade Station at the 5th Level has gaming machines for young and old plus Funville for the smaller kids.

How to Get There

The fastest way to get to Shangri-La Plaza along EDSA is by taxi which will take you directly to the mall. The MRT Line 3 has a station (Shaw Boulevard station) that is directly connected to the mall. From the station, just take the escalator that will take you right to the 5th Level of the Main Wing. The FX (air-conditioned utility vehicle) that will take you straight to the mall are available in different parts of Metro Manila such as Dangwa in Caloocan, Buendia (Wikipedia Article) in Makati; San Juan, Cubao; LRT-2 Pureza station, and Quiapo.

Travel Tips

Be prepared with cash for some establishments, especially in the food court. Big C Money Changer is available at the lower ground level of the main wing. BPI, RCBC, and UCPB are three banks that are located at the main wing. There are several ATMs available throughout the mall as well.

As in all other places throughout Metro Manila, always be extra careful about your belongings, especially your valuables and gadgets, as there are thieves who are constantly on the lookout for easy prey.
Avoid talking to strangers since they might try to fool you or rob you of your valuables. There are scammers roaming around the malls looking for people they can rob.
