Whether you’re visiting the Twin Cities, passing through, or already living there, when you find yourself in Minneapolis or St. Paul, you should make sure that they make the trip out to Bloomington to visit the Mall of America.

Visiting the Mall of America isn’t your average trip to the mall. This place is one of the largest shopping malls in the country and the world and covers nearly 5 million square feet! The mall was built on the former site of Metropolitan Stadium (Wikipedia Article)which had hosted games for the Minnesota Vikings' football team and the Minnesota Twins' baseball team until the early 1980s.

The mall first opened its doors to shoppers on August 11, 1992, and was, and still is, the second-largest mall in the United States of America. Currently between 11,000 and 13,000 workers are employed in the mall and often has more people in it than a large number of Minnesota’s smaller towns. In fact, more than eight times the population of Minnesota visits the mall each year.

Shopping

The Mall of America would hardly be a mall if it didn’t have shops, would it? It’s hardly surprising that the second-largest mall in the country is home to plenty of shops. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it here.

The mall is home to over 500 different shops selling almost everything you could think of. Of the hundreds of shops at the mall, there are also a number of top names including: Macy’s, Nordstrom; Sears, Forever 21; Best Buy, Marshall’s; and Nordstrom Rack, to name a few.

Specialty and Unique Stores

In addition to all the big names present at the Mall of AMerica, there are also a number of stores that are either unique to Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Midwest, or the entire country! While seeing some of your favourite brand's largest stores is one of the great reasons to visit the mall, seeing one-of-a-kind stores is an even better reason!

One store of particular interest is the "As Seen on TV Store". Remember all that stuff for sale that you've seen on late-night TV? In the As Seen on TV Store you can buy all the weird and wonderful things from the infomercials without having to pay the $9.95 for shipping!

The American Girl store is a place where you can pamper your dolls and treat them just like real people! While there are a number of American Girl stores around the country, this is the only one in Minnesota and to get to the next nearest locations, you'd have to either make the 6-hour drive to Chicago, Illinois, or the 8-hour drive to St. Louis, Missouri. Wouldn't it be much better to simple have lunch with your doll while you're in Minneapolis?

If you feel like taking home a souvenir for your brain, you should head along to the Marbles store. This store specialises in games, toys, and other products designed to improve your brain and keep it active. While there are two locations in Minnesota, there are only a handful of Marbles stores around the country and none outside of the United States.

The Love from Minnesota chain was founded as a tiny kiosk in Minnesota and over the course of three decades the chain has since expanded into a huge number of destinations around the state. Unsurprisingly, there are not any locations outside of Minnesota. This is the place to go if you want to bring back a local souvenir from the North Star State! The Love from Minnesota location is actually known as "Minnesot-ah!" and can be found on East Broadway.

If you somehow don't find a suitable gift of souvenir from Minnesot-ah!, you should consider going to one of the mall's own gift stores. There are three different Mall of America Gift Store locations where visitors and tourists can pick up any number of items to serve as a reminder and souvenir of the time they spent enjoying themselves in the mall.

Dining

You’re sure to work up an appetite as you walk around this massive mall. The Mall of America has plenty of bars, restaurants, and various eateries. Whether you want to grab something on the go or sit down and have a full meal, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Plenty of different cuisines are available from all over the world.

More than Shopping

If you’re visiting with children or are just a big kid on the inside, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do at the mall. There are always plenty of events going on at the mall and a number of entertainment complexes.

Nickelodeon Universe

The gem in the mall’s crown is the Nickelodeon Universe, an indoor theme park that can be found in the very center of the mall. This theme park covers seven acres of land and has all the kind of rides and attractions you’d expect at any other theme park. There’s even roller coasters, thrill rides, chill rides, and all the familiar characters from Nickelodeon’s TV shows.

Take in a movie at Theaters: Mall of America, where you can enjoy the latest major motion pictures, independent films, and even motion seating! You can also enjoy food and drinks while you’re there.

Don’t miss the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium at Mall of America where you can witness over 10,000 different sea creatures. There are jellyfish, sharks, sea turtles, rays, as well as plenty of interactive exhibits and activities to keep you entertained during your trip to the mall. In fact, you can even walk underneath a whole host of sharks in the aquarium’s glass tunnel! Swimming with the sharks is also available for certified divers.

Getting to the Mall of America

By Car

The Mall of America has plenty of parking available and there are a number of ways to get there if you’re driving. If you are heading from the north of the mall, you’ll want to take the I-35 South until you get to the I-35W South and then the I-494 East and taking the 24th Avenue S. exit to get to the mall.

From the south you’ll take the I-35 North before joining the I-35W North and again the I-494 and the 24th Avenue S. exit.

If you’re heading to the mall from the west you’ll need to be on the I-94 East and then to join the I-494 South and onto the Highway 77 South. From the highway you can either take the Killebrew Dr. or the 81st Street/Lindau Lane exits.

From the east you’ll be going from the I-94 West to the I-494 South and taking the exit on 24th Avenue S.

By Metro

If you don’t have a car or just don’t feel like driving, the metro can be used to reach the Mall of America from either of the Twin Cities and the airport. The Hiawatha Line (Route 55) can be used to get to the mall from both Minneapolis and the airport. Trains are frequent and you shouldn’t ever have to wait more than 10 to 15 minutes.

You can take Route 54 from St. Paul’s 6th and 7th streets to the Mall of America. This route also can take you to Minneapolis and the airport.
