Located at the famous Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City (Wikipedia Article), Philippines, Gateway Mall is the premier lifestyle shopping mall that brought life into what was once a sleepy commercial center populated by Ali Mall, Farmer's Market, and SM Cubao. The mall was developed and is managed by Araneta Center. It is directly connected to Araneta Coliseum which is the venue for many entertainment and sports events. Five floors with a total 95,000 square meters of leasable area house over 300 shops and restaurants.

Bright hallways and attractive storefronts attract over 220,000 shoppers on an average day. What is particularly unique about this mall is their concierge service, the first in the Philippines, helpful and trustworthy attendants are available to assist shoppers including making reservations at the mall restaurants or booking a seat at the Gateway Cineplex 10. They can arrange for taxi service or car rentals. You can ask them for free eco-friendly shopping bags, mobile phone charging, and use of wheelchairs, to name a few.

History

Gateway Mall was opened to the public in 2004. The Gateway Tower with the 6 level mall extension, 26 levels of office space, two levels of penthouse restaurants, and a helipad was opened in July 2013. The mall extension is seamlessly connected to the main mall and added 10,000 square meters more of leasable area to the former 85,000 square meters.

What to See and Do

Shopping

The biggest National Bookstore, the Philippine's largest bookstore chain, is located at this mall. Its anchor stores include the posh Rustan's Department Store and Rustan's Supermarket. Several international and foreign brands are housed here including Papemelroti, a local company that sells handmade gifts and crafts including those made of paper, wire and wood. Bibliophiles will particularly like the wide assortment of local and imported books available at Fully Booked.

Leisurewear and outdoor clothes like jackets and trousers are available at the UK-based Regatta shop at Level 2 while ladies will have a field day at Thailand brand Espada's latest collection of clothes and accessories including chic bags and purses. The popular Crocs footwear from the U.S. with its shoes, sandals, and clogs can be found at Level 2.

Dining

One of the mall's anchors is Food Express at Level 3 that hosts a feast of food shops including international fast food chains like Taco Bell, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, and Burger King. Other restaurants worth visiting include Cibo, an upscale Italian restaurant with specialties like Farfalle alla Veneziana and Pizza Cavialle Salmone. Italianni's is another popular restaurant chain that originated in Italy and serves delectable pasta, pizza, and wings.

Get a taste of New Orleans' cooking at Gumbo with their Shrimps Jambalaya, Spaghetti and Chorizo Vongole and Chicken, Fish and Shrimps Gumbo. Burgoo serves Italian-American and Tex-Mex dishes with an extensive menu including specialties like Stone-Baked Pizzas, Shrimp Popcorn Caesar, and Shrimps and Ribs Platter. A perfect respite after a tiring day of shopping would be Gateway Mall's air-conditioned floating garden, The Oasis. This is truly an oasis in the midst of Cubao's traffic-choked streets and the crowded glass/steel/concrete mall. This mini paradise has 60-foot Royal Palms, an abundance of exotic plants, fish pond, water fountain, and a wishing well with a vast view of the sky. Operated by the world-class Mandarin Oriental Café and Deli of the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel, you can enjoy alfresco lunch or dinner and a serving of the famous Hainanese Chicken.

Entertainment

Gateway Cineplex 10 is popular for having the Globe Platinum Cinema, the first theater in the Philippines with La-Z Boy seats, unlimited popcorn and drinks. This was long before SM Mall of Asia with the second La-Z Boy theater was built. It is also the first mall to have a Cineplex or a cinema complex of 10 cinemas, all with stadium seats and Dolby Digital sound. The latest local and international films are shown in these 10 cinemas.

Time Zone Arena at Levels 3 and 4 is a family entertainment center with the latest arcade games for the kids and adults alike.

Travel Tips

Cubao is a highly congested place and even with the security measures enforced by Gateway Mall including roving security personnel, it is always best to be on the side of caution and be alert for pickpockets, hold-uppers and con artists who will use different techniques to rob you of your valuables. Do not allow yourself to be distracted and keep all belongings close to you.

Although most establishments accept all types of credit cards, there may be smaller ones who will not so be prepared and bring some cash. Foreign exchange shops Asian FX Money Exchange and IFX Foreign Exchange are available at the Second Level of Gateway Mall.
